Farming cattle is a lucrative industry, and Plainsight has now unveiled an AI platform to help farmers make sure their animals are still present in the right numbers. According to Plainsight, the platform, called Vision AI, has a 99.7% accuracy rate for determining the amount of any certain animal, such as cattle, sheep, or pigs, in a specific area.

“We had customers come to us with this problem, and that’s typically how we build solutions”
Elizabeth Spears, Chief Product Officer at Plainsight
Those in the farming industry must be well aware of the number of each animal they own because cattle alone can cost between $800 and $1,200 per head. The artificial intelligence platform was inspired by a sizable industrial farm, but according to Spears, this capability may be readily incorporated into both sizable industrial farms and smaller family farms.
“I would say it could work for both, but it’s most applicable for the larger farms, because usually that’s where counting becomes the most economically essential”
Elizabeth Spears, Chief Product Officer at Plainsight
According to PlainSight it’s a pretty useful remedy that is also extremely reasonably priced. For larger-scale businesses, it’s the most cost-effective option, said Spears. So, with Vision in particular, you must maintain and update the model based on the farm environment.
The platform helps farmers keep an eye on the health and safety of the animals on the farm in addition to simply determining the appropriate number of a certain species of livestock. Their model supervises the animal’s standing and walking postures, as well as its food intake, and uses these and other visual signs as health indicators.
