Which Data Tesla Collects From Your Car ?

Posted on September 8, 2022

Customers of Tesla can choose whether or not to participate in the data collecting, but most owners are more than happy to do so because Tesla utilizes the information to feed the neural networks that power its Full Self-Driving and Autopilot systems. In this article, we go through the comprehensive list for the data collected by Tesla company from its cars and its users.

The Collected Data

Tesla is gathering a lot of data from the automobiles they insure, despite the fact that the data they now gather is aggregated. According to DriveTeslaCanada, there is a long list of type of data received on a regular basis from the cars to the Tesla data center.

  • Unique Drive ID
  • Record Version
  • Car Firmware Version
  • Driver Profile Name
  • Start / End Time
  • Drive Duration
  • Start / End Odometer
  • # of Autopilot Strikeouts
  • # of Forward Collision Warnings
  • # of Lane Departure Warnings
  • # of ABS activations (All & User)
  • Time spent within 1s of car in front
  • Time spent within 3s of car in front
  • Acceleration Variance
  • Service Mode
  • Delivered

According to Tesla, the data is used to provide deep insights about driver behaviour. And, since the company offer its own car insurance plan. This can be both advantageous in getting lower rates that sometimes can be 30% lower than normal rates, but also sometime dangerous, since potentially higher rates are to be applied for driver that are flagged as dangerous by the Tesla system.

Get Your Copy of the Data

Tesla offer the possibility to get your own copy of the data collected from you. When you request a copy of your data, the company first verify that you are the account holder making the request. After verification, they organize the data associated with your Tesla Account in file formats that are easy to understand. When the data is ready, Tesla will notify you by email that it’s available for download. You have 7 days to download your data, after which time it is removed from that location, and you will need to request it again.
